After about six months of just doing this myself, I decided to get more people involved so
that we could reach more soldiers.  I approached the Maryland State Dental Association
and they responded enthusiastically to the idea of helping Maryland National Guard units
get through tough, dangerous days away from home.  As a dentist in the state of Maryland,
I was quite proud that the state dental organization became the first sponsor of A Taste of
Home.  The Maryland National Guard gives us the names and addresses of leaders that
can distribute the items to men and women in harm’s way

In the following months, I found that most everyone (especially ex-military) really respond to
this program.  People really get it.  They are more than willing to help by donating their time
and/or money to support ATOH.  I have formed a board or directors with dynamic
professionals volunteering their time, talent and treasure.  A Taste of Home Inc. is a
Maryland licensed, non-profit entity.

I started A Taste of Home, Inc. (ATOH) January of
2006.  I met the mother of a platoon leader that
trusted me enough to give me her son’s email and
APO address.  I asked her what I should send, and
she said that after eating their MRE, they like to have
a Power Bar.  So, the first shipment was just that,
along with some candy they could give to the local
children.  Subsequent shipments contained more and
more edibles, magazines, electronics (PSP’s), etc.
The soldier’s response was incredible.  They were so
grateful.  The platoon leader said:

“I can’t tell you how important it is for me and my men
to know that we are well thought of.”
